December 7, 2018

R202, Astronomy-Mathematics Building, NTU

Invited Speakers:
Tadashi Tokieda (Stanford University)

Organizers:
Chun-Chi Lin (National Taiwan Normal University)

Aim and Scope:

2018 winter is an important milestone for Taiwan Mathematics, there would be various international distinguished mathematicians get around in Taipei to discuss the latest research. A lot of great events would be held at the same time, such as 2018 ICCM, Annual Meeting of The Mathematical Society of Republic of China (TMS),etc

It's our honor to invite Prof. Tadashi Tokieda to Taiwan to give a series of lecture. Tadashi Tokieda is a Japanese mathematician, working in mathematical physics. He is a professor of mathematics at Stanford University;previously he was the Director of Studies in Mathematicsat Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He is also very active in inventing, collecting, and studying toys that uniquely reveal and explore real-world surprises of mathematics and physics.

We firmly believe that the younger generation would be deeply inspired by his talk and also it would be a great contribution from the collaboration between Taiwan and Japan mathematics research field.

Structure and Preparation:

Prof. Tadashi Tokieda would give the following two talks.

The morning academic lecture at NCTS:

Title: Applying physics to mathematics

Abstract: Traditionally mathematics is expected to turn up unexpected applications in physics. We will explore the reverse direction, showing a number of striking examples where physics can be applied to discover, then to prove, theorems in mathematics.

The evening `general audience' lecture at NTNU:

Title: Two magic tricks

Abstract: I will perform two magic tricks.  The first one, intriguing, goes to problems of computability, and the second one, romantic, comes from an unusual view on topology.

The academic lecture will be on a blackboard with chalk (or a whiteboard with a marker).
