NCTS International Geometric Measure Theory Seminar

Focuses on the regularity and singularity theories for submanifolds of Riemannian manifolds and some of their applications

We envisage an event built around virtual presentations on progress in geometric measure theory by external speakers. Every researcher is free to register as participant and thus gain access to a virtual facility which is complete with lobby, lecture hall, and separate rooms with boards for discussion. Thus, it shall recreate the exchange possibilities found at international conferences. For registered participants, the discussion rooms and their boards can be used at all times.

Organizers :

Guido De Philippis (New York University, Courant Institute)

Ulrich Menne (National Taiwan Normal University & National Center for Theoretical Sciences)

Yoshihiro Tonegawa (Tokyo Institute of Technology)

How to Join Us

Registration :

Fill out the registration form (allow one work day for processing ) and install the MS Teams App.

Wait to receive an email by Microsoft Teams (subject: You have been added as a guest to National Center for Theoretical Sciences in Microsoft Teams) after your form has been processed by our staff.

Click the link "Open Microsoft Teams" in the email by Microsoft Teams; we recommend to sign out from your current MS Teams account - if any - before.

● Try to enter the virtual venue at least one day before the talk; if you have trouble, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: MS Teams asks for a password but I did not receive a password.

A: If your email address is already registered with Microsoft (e.g., for MS Teams at your university or Skype), please enter this password. If you cannot reset the password, you can send us an alternative email address.

Q: A Self-Service-Azure AD-account cannot be created.

A: Some universities prevent the users to create a guest account at MS Teams elsewhere with their affiliation email address. In this case, please send us an alternative email address.

Virtual Venue :

Premises: a lobby, lecture hall, and six named discussion rooms: Almgren, Besicovitch, De Giorgi, Federer, Preiss, and Simon.

Software requirement: MS Teams App.

Capacity of virtual venue: 300 persons.

Instructions of MS Teams

-Basic Instructions-

Attending the lecture

Navigate to Teams International GMT Seminar Lecture Hall in MS Teams and click "Join."
(The link should also bring you to the lecture hall directly.)

Meeting conversation

In each meeting, you can send text messages to all its participants using the text bubble symbol.

-Further Instructions-

Chat

You can chat with any subset of the participants (e.g., if you wish to meet in a small group in one of the discussions rooms before or after the lecture). Navigate to "Chat" (top level hierarchy, same as Teams) and start a new chat with the writing pad symbol. It is also possible to use our tags (e.g., IT, staff, and organiser) in the "To:" field to send a chat message to all people with this tag.

Files

If the speaker has uploaded files for you, they will be available in the tab "Files" within the lecture hall.

Discussion rooms

In each discussion room, there may be at most one meeting; click on "Meet" or the camera symbol to start one. If one is already ongoing, you see a camera symbol next to the room's name and there will be a message in the tab "Posts." Use the message to check who is in the room (hover over the persons' avatars) and, if you wish to join, press "Join." In each room, there is a virtual whiteboard (select the Board tab).

Boards

Participants may write on the boards in the lobby and in the discussion rooms. There, everyone's cursor will receive an automatically generated name. With a keyboard, we recommend to use the text boxes; with a pad, you can write with its pen.

Wednesday, 18 Nov. 2020, 6:00-7:00 a.m. (Taipei Time)

Note: We encourage everyone to employ the virtual venue to interact (through chat, meeting, and boards) before and after the talk.

Title:
Stable minimal hypersurfaces in $\R^{N+1+\ell}$ with singular set an arbitrary closed $K\subset\{0\}\times\R^{\ell}$.

Leon Simon (Stanford University)

Abstract:
With respect to a $C^{\infty}$ metric which is close to the standard Euclidean metric on $\R^{N+1+\ell}$, where $N\ge 7$ and $\ell\ge 1$ are given, we construct a class of embedded $(N+\ell)$-dimensional hypersurfaces (without boundary) which are minimal and strictly stable, and which have singular set equal to an arbitrary preassigned closed subset $K\subset\{0\}\times\R^{\ell}$.
