Advancing Biocontrol Understanding via Mathematical and Computational Modelling
Lucas dos Anjos (University of Alberta)

Abstract

In this presentation, we explore the advancements in biocontrol modelling through the lens of three recent studies. The first study (BioControl 67.3 (2022): 263-274) highlights how intraguild predation, often perceived as detrimental, can be contextually beneficial in managing pest populations, emphasizing the importance of initial population densities in biocontrol success. The second study (Ecol Inform 77 (2023): 102168) introduces a Bayesian calibration framework for ecological time series analysis with applications to biocontrol. Lastly, the third study (Ecol Modell 484 (2023): 110490) addresses the challenges in controlling the lepidopteran fall armyworm, considering the interplay between pest resistance to Bt toxins, pest defence mechanisms, and the efficacy of parasitoids in pest control. These studies demonstrate the applicability of computational modelling in ecological research, offering insights into predator-prey interactions, biocontrol strategies, and the broader implications for applied ecology.
