The Development of Global Numerical Forecast System in Central Weather Bureau
Chien-He Chen (Central Weather Bureau)
Abstract:
Numerical weather prediction (NWP) system is a compound operational system. It consists of computer science, mathematics and physics. Basically, there are 3 components in the system which is high performance computer (HPC), data assimilation system and forecast model system. Central Weather Bureau (CWB) had begun to construct this system science 1983 and the second generation spectrum global forecast system (GFS) was operational at HPC Cray8I in 1994. During year 2012 to 2014, The CWB installed a new Peta-Scale HPC. The resolution of the global forecast model is upgraded to T511L60 and the model vertical coordinate is changed from sigma to sigma-pressure hybrid coordinate and model top is also rose from 1mb to 0.1mb. Base on this spectrum model, we are developing the Semi-Lagrangian Semi-Implicit (SLSI) model in house. The main point of this talk is to introduce the numerical weather prediction system and the developing forecast model and the future works in CWB.
