Papanikolas's recent work connects explicitly the coordinates of the period of the nth tensor power of the Carlitz module to the divided derivatives of the Carlitz period.  This renewed focus on those divided derivatives as well as Maurischat's new proof of the algebraic independence of the latter values gives an occasion to reconsider the original and still unpublished result joint with A.J. van der Poorten.
