A famous theorem of Siu states that plurigenera of complex projective manifolds are invariant under smooth deformation. The only known proof is deeply analytic. In this talk I will show how one can give an algebraic proof of Siu's result, assuming the specialization of Kodaira dimension less than or equal to zero, in families of varieties with canonical singularities.
