In contrast to characteristic zero, where geometric insight can be gained through the classical theory of Riemann surfaces, many phenomena are exclusive to positive characteristics. For instance, the fundamental group of an affine line over a field of characteristic p is NON-trivial. In this expository talk, I will explore this phenomenon and present some research directions it inspires, such as Abhyankar's conjectures in Galois theory and the lifting problem for covers.
