Abstract

The classical Fourier transform on functions on the n-dimensional Euclidean space can be identified with a unitary operator associated with the oscillator representation of the symplectic Lie algebra sp(2n,R). We describe how to identify this operator from the action of elements in the symplectic group.  We also discuss the elements corresponding to the Fourier transforms defined by non-definite bilinear forms.
