From Mutations to Mathematics: Understanding Cancer Evolution (I)
Wei-Ting Hung (National Taiwan University)

Abstract
Regardless of decades of efforts, cancer remains an undefeated foe for mankind, bringing suffering and sorrow to individuals and their families. Fundamental questions are still unknown, such as: Which cells are the ancestors of metastases? Where are they from and when do they start to spread out? Answering these questions will provide a sound scientific basis for the development of effective treatments. However, tumors can be gigantic and the result of a complex mixture of both tumor and other cells. In this presentation, the power of  using phylogenetics to navigate us through that complex tumor tissue will be presented, and the significance of the marriage between biology and mathematics for revealing answers to critical biological questions will be discussed.
