Existence and Non-existence of Physical Measures

Abstract
We will introduce the notion of a “Physical Measure” in Dynamical Systems. These are measures which describe the statistical properties of (almost) all initial conditions. It is conjectured that “most” systems admit physical measure and there is a very active area of research on this topic. I will give a review of some of these results but also describe the some recent results which give many examples of maps which di not have physical measures and for which (almost) all initial conditions exhibit non-statistical behaviour.
