Spaces of Roots and Their Combinatorics Thibault Poiret (University of St Andrews)
Abstract
Pick a line bundle which "makes sense on every smooth curve", i.e. a line bundle on the universal -marked smooth curve of genus . The space parametrizing -th roots of is a finite cover of the space of smooth curves. These spaces of roots show up in a variety of geometric problems (enumerative geometry, Hurwitz theory), and they can help understand itself. I will discuss some aspects of their geometry and the geometry of their compactifications.
