Moduli Spaces Birational to Orthogonal and Unitary Modular Varieties

Abstract: I will explain how several classical moduli spaces are birationally related to modular varieties of orthogonal or unitary type, and compare their GIT and arithmetic compactifications. I will then present recent results on sextic curves of fixed singular type. This is a joint work with Chenglong Yu and Zhiwei Zheng.
