Symplectic Irrationality via Gromov-Witten Invariants
Jiaji Cai (Stony Brook University)

Abstract

I will explain how Gromov-Witten theory can be used to show that cubic and quartic threefolds are symplectically irrational, which in particular recovers the classical results of Clemens-Griffiths and Iskovskikh-Manin. First, I will give some background on the problem, and explain what Gromov-Witten theory is about. Then I will sketch the main arguments in the proofs. Finally, I will discuss the proof of the decomposition theorem, which will be the most technical part of the talk.
