The Incompressible Navier-Stokes Limit of the Discrete-Velocity BGK Boltzmann Equation
Zhongyang Gu (Shenzhen University)

Abstract

The numerical implementation of the lattice Boltzmann equation is a successful tool for simulating fluid flows. However, whether the consideration of a finite number of particle velocities is sufficient to simulate fluid flows has not been rigorously investigated before. In this talk, we will present that a global solution to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with small initial data can be constructed by justifying the hydrodynamic limit of the discrete-velocity BGK Boltzmann equation. We will see that as long as the lattice structure has some certain symmetry, the Boltzmann equation fits well in the context of studying the hydrodynamic limit even its velocity variable is discretized. This talk is based on joint works with Xin Hu (Wuhan U.), Pritpal Matharu (Max Planck), Bartosz Protas (McMaster), Makiko Sasada (U. of Tokyo) and Tsuyoshi Yoneda (Hitotsubashi U.).
