In this talk, I will introduce the variational method to construct traveling wave solutions for a simple model in a real line.  Furthermore, the structure of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system is discussed and the existences of the traveling wave solutions are obtained by a variational approach. Based on such a formulation, the wave speed can be characterized by a root of a special function.
